Model rockets are a somewhat niche hobby currently, however through companies
like ours, we hope to bring this current niche hobby to main stream customers.
Model rockets provide fantastic value for money as a hobby and are used as great
learning tools within schools. If you are new to model rockets then try our
model rockets introduction.
Model rockets tend to be categorised by their manufacturers into skill levels,
although some, such as Squirrel Works don't. The skill levels are an indication
of the time and complexity of the model rocket kit, however it is only a guide.
So dont get too hung up on the Skill Level.
-
Ready To Fly - This is where most people start off. No paint, glue or
modeling skills required. Rocket comes assembled and is ready for liftoff in
just minutes.
-
E2X - No paint or special tools needed. E2X® kits contain
parts that are coloured and easy to assemble. Simply glue the parts together as
per the instructions, apply the self-adhesive decals, attach the recovery system
and you are ready to blast off! Assembly takes as little as 1 hour. We
have also included the Quick Kits from Quest Aerospace as these are under 1 hour
construction time also with no painting also.
-
Level 1 - Requires some painting, gluing and sanding. Features die cut balsa
fins, slotted body tubes, plastic nose cones and self-adhesive decals. Step by
step instructions make building very easy. Assembly takes at least an afternoon.
This category contains kits from Estes, Fliskits and Quest Aerospace.
-
Level 2 - First tier of more advanced kits. Requires beginner skills in model rocket
construction and finishing. Features die cut balsa or plastic fins, plastic nose
cones and unfinished body tubes. Assembly time may take a complete day. This
category contains kits from Estes, Fliskits, Quest Aerospace, Dynastar and QModeling.
-
Level 3 - Second tier of more advanced kits. Requires moderate skills in model rocket
construction and finishing. Features multiple die cut balsa fins and parts,
unfinished body tubes, complex designs and plastic nose cones. Assembly time may
take a couple of days. This category contains kits from Estes, Fliskits, Quest Aerospace,
Dynastar and QModeling.
-
Level 4 - The most advanced kit level. Requires high degree of model rocket construction
and finishing skills. Features multiple die cut balsa parts, vacuum formed
plastic detailing, unfinished body tubes and water soluble decals. Assembly can
take several days depending on detail required. This category contains kits from
Quest Aerospace, Dynastar and QModeling.
Once you have chosen your model rocket kit, there are many accessories
available to upgrade your model rocket. You may consider replacing the basic and
disposable parachute with something a little more durable, such as the great
Top Flight Standard Parachutes (Thin Mill).
You may decide that standard wadding is not for you, in which case
maybe some
Bio degradable wadding may be more appropriate
or you may wish to try a
Top Flight Nomex Firewall and get rid of the
need to buy wadding at all.
Don't forget those useful books, such as the
Handbook of Model Rocketry.
